3.8 Table 4 shows that half of S4 pupils who were taking Standard Grades in 1997-98, had at least one module success; 34 per cent of pupils were successful in one NC module and 9 per cent were successful in two modules.
3.9 While there were about 3,000 pupils in S4 who did not gain any Standard Grades, over half of those (56 per cent) had some successes in National Certificate modules. Pupils with no Standard Grades recorded the highest percentage of successes for 3 or more modules.

Number of Standard Grade awards for S4 Pupils: 1997-98 Chart 3

3.10 Highers are awarded at levels A-D. Awards at levels A-C are regarded as a pass. Table 5 shows the number of NC module successes for pupils who gained a Higher pass in S5. About two-thirds of pupils who gained Higher passes in S5 were also successful in at least 1 module, with 35 per cent gaining between 1 and 3 modules and 32 per cent gaining 4 or more modules. Pupils with fewer Higher passes gained more modules, indicating that some pupils may take an NC module as an alternative to a Higher in S5.
