Higher Education Graduates and Diplomates and their First Destinations 1986-87 to 1996-97

7. Location of Employment

7.1 Of those graduates and diplomates who gained permanent employment, or obtained employment overseas, after qualifying in 1996-97, 70 per cent stayed in Scotland. This was similar to previous years. (Table 11)

7.2 More Scottish students obtained a job in Scotland in 1996-97; 83 per cent compared to 82 per cent the previous year. Eleven per cent moved elsewhere in the UK to obtain employment, the lowest level in recent history. Only a small number moved overseas (4 per cent).

7.3 For those students from elsewhere in the UK who studied in Scotland, only 3 in 10 obtained permanent employment in Scotland.

7.4 Three quarters of overseas students who had studied in Scotland returned overseas to employment.

7.5 Graduates and diplomates with a Creative Arts qualification were most likely to remain in Scotland when they obtained permanent employment. (Table 11)

7.6 Those students who obtained permanent employment after studying for a Physical Sciences qualification were most likely to move somewhere else in the UK. Those who had studied Medicine and Dentistry were least likely to move to employment elsewhere in the UK.

7.7 Languages students were the most mobile in terms of the location of employment after leaving education, one third of whom moved overseas to obtain permanent employment.
