Higher Education Graduates and Diplomates and their First Destinations 1986-87 to 1996-97

5. First Destination of Graduates and Diplomates

5.1 Eighty three per cent of the 1996-97 graduates and diplomates entered employment or further study. (Table 6).

5.2 Female graduates and diplomates were more likely to have permanent or temporary employment than males.

5.3 As would be expected, there was considerable variation in first destinations between first degree graduates, diplomates and postgraduates. The proportion of first degree graduates continuing in full-time study was 22 per cent compared with diplomates (52 per cent) and postgraduates (7 per cent).

5.4 Conversely, 60 per cent of postgraduates entered paid employment, compared with first degree graduates (59 per cent) and diplomates (43 per cent).
