4. Examination Results of First Degree Graduates

4.1 The proportion of first degree graduates receiving either a first or second class honours degree has increased from 54 per cent in 1986-87 to 65 per cent in 1996-97. (Table 5).

4.2 Although fewer men than women achieved first degrees in 1996-97, men obtained a better class of degree, with 8 per cent getting a first class honours compared to 7 per cent for females.
