Higher Education Graduates and Diplomates and their First Destinations 1986-87 to 1996-97

3.8 In 1996-97, first degree graduates were predominantly aged between 21 and 24, with 70 per cent in this age group. (Table 2)

3.9 Sub degree diplomates were more usually younger, with 40 per cent aged between 16 and 20, although one in five were in their thirties.

3.10 Postgraduates were more evenly and widely spread over the upper age groups, as would be expected, with around half aged 30 and over.

3.11 Business Administration continued to be the most popular subject for graduates and diplomates in 1996-97, accounting for almost one quarter of the total qualifiers in that year. The second most popular subject area of study was social studies.(Table 3)

3.12 Looking at the level of qualification and sex of the graduates and diplomates in 1996-97, Business Administration was the most popular subject across all of these, with the exception of female postgraduates for whom the most popular subject was Education, and male first degree graduates with whom Engineering and Technology was most popular. (Table 4)
