1. The figure for vehicles licensed in 1975 is estimated, due to transfer of licensing fuctions to DVLA

2. Vehicles licensed figures for 1983 are not directly comparable with those for previous years due to changes in taxation classes.

3. From 1 June 1991, one way tolls were introduced on southbound crossings of the Tay Bridge: northbound crossings were no longer counted.

4. For years up to 1992 estimates are taken from the DVLA annual vehicle census, from 1993 onwards estimates are taken from the DETR's Vehicle Information Database and are not consistent with previous years.

5. From 1 September 1997, one way tolls were introduced on northbound crossings of the Forth Bridge: southbound crossings were no longer counted.
