2. The figures for "Car" and "Air" are for calendar years; the figures for "Bus" and "Rail" are for the financial years which start in the specified calendar years (eg the "1996" figures are for "1996-97")

3. Those services for which (at least) ten years' figures are available: Caledonian MacBrayne, P&O Orkney & Shetland, and Orkney Ferries. The figures from 1995 are affected by the reduction in traffic caused by the withdrawal of the Kyle-Kyleakin service when the Skye Bridge opened in October 1995.

4. The apparent fall in "Car" traffic in 1996 is thought to be the result of a change in DETR's method of estimating traffic volumes
