1. The figures for 1992 and 1993 are on different bases, due to a change in the source of the statistics: see the Notes to chapter 1..

2. These figures are for the financial years (April to March) which start in the relevant year (eg the "1995" figures are for the 1995-96 financial year).

3. Freight lifted in Scotland by UK-registered hauliers, regardless of whether the destination is in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK or outwith the UK.

4. Again, all freight lifted in Scotland. The figures are for the financial years starting in the relevant years (eg the "1996" figure is for 1996-97).

5. The "coastal shipping" series comprises freight lifted in Scotland plus freight lifted elsewhere in the UK which has a destination in Scotland.

6. Crude oil carried by pipelines over 50km in length. The increase between 1989 and 1990 is believed to be largely due to changes in coverage
