Community safety issues
Among the community safety issues covered by the survey are households' experiences of fires in the home and of housebreaking. Across the sample as a whole, 3% of households say that they have experienced a fire in the past 12 months. The proportion that have been broken into is also 3%. Although the numerical base at present is small, there is some indication that households that have experienced one such community safety problem are more likely to have experienced another - for example, 10% of households that have experienced a fire have also suffered a break-in, compared with just 2% of the rest of the sample (no table).
Because of the relatively small base, it is not yet possible to look in any detail at risk factors associated with fires or housebreaking. Such analysis will become possible, however, as the cumulative sample size increases.
Ownership of home computers/Internet access from home
Across the sample as a whole, 29% of households have a personal computer, and 40% of those households have access to the Internet from home. Overall, then, 12% of all households in Scotland (or approximately 260,000 homes) currently have domestic access to the Internet (no table). This figure is likely to continue to rise and it will be interesting to track any changes as the survey progresses.
In terms of the characteristics of individuals, those aged 35 to 44 are most likely to live in households with access to the Internet (24%), and those aged 75 and over least likely (1%)(Table 17). Men are more likely than women to live in a household with Internet access (16% compared with 13%).

As Figure 3 indicates, both ownership of personal computers and Internet access from home are strongly related to household income. Those in the highest net income group are roughly five times as likely as those in the lowest income group to own a PC or to be able to access to the Internet from home.
