Table 16 shows the educational qualifications held by respondents to the survey aged between 16 and 64. One person in four holds no formal educational qualification, with this figure rising to four in ten of the oldest age group. The most common level of qualification held is 'O' Grade or equivalent, held by a half of all respondents, followed by Higher or equivalent, held by roughly a quarter.

Respondents aged between 16 and 64 were also asked whether they were currently taking part in any form of post-school education or training. Twelve per cent say that they are currently taking part in on-the-job training, 4% that they are attending a Further Education or college course, 4% that they are attending a University course and 3% an adult education or evening class. Just one person in a hundred in this age group is currently taking an Open University or distance learning course (no table).
