Scottish Household Survey Quarterly Bulletin No.1

1 Introduction

This bulletin presents the first results from the Scottish Household Survey, a major new continuous survey funded by the Scottish Executive covering the whole of Scotland. The aim of the survey is to provide representative information about the composition, characteristics and behaviours of Scottish households - both nationally and at a more disaggregate level.

The survey covers a range of issues but focuses, in particular, on the areas of transport, local government and social inclusion issues such as housing, health and personal finances. Over the first four years of the survey, a total of some 62,000 interviews will be carried out.

The aim of this first bulletin is to provide an overview of the type of information collected by the survey and to outline some key findings in each of the main topic areas for the first quarter of 1999. The results presented here are based on 2,601 interviews carried out in February and March 1999.

Key findings from the survey will be made available on a quarterly basis and a full report will be published annually. Anonymised data from the survey will be made available for analysis.

Further methodological details and a note on definitions used are given at the end of this bulletin.
