Statistical Bulletin - Summary Results of the September 1998 School Census

Staffing: Teachers

7.6 At September 1998, there were just under 1,900 (FTE) teachers employed in publicly funded special schools. Nearly 84 per cent of these were female. There was little variation by grade in the percentage who were female, including at Headteacher level, where almost three quarters were female.

7.7 Nearly a quarter of teachers in special schools were working part time. The mode of working of teachers is recorded on a school-by-school basis. Thus staff who work full-time, but in more than one school, will be recorded as working part-time in each of these schools. Similarly, that will include those staff who work in the primary/special or secondary/special departments of a school serving more than one sector. Part-time working occurred most frequently amongst unpromoted teachers, nearly a third of whom were working part-time. Part-time working was uncommon in other grades.
