Participation in Education by 16-21 Year Olds in Scotland: 1987-88 to 1997-98

6. Further education

6.1 The overall percentage of the 16-21 year old population participating in full-time further education increased from 3 per cent in 1987-88 to 6 per cent in 1997-98. Participation was mainly in the 16-18 age group where the percentage increased from 5 per cent to 10 per cent. An estimated 2 per cent of 19-21 year olds were on full-time courses of further education in 1997-98. A larger proportion (11 per cent) of 16-21 year olds were in part-time further education compared with the percentage on full-time courses (6 per cent), though this percentage difference was not as great as in 1987-88 (11 per cent compared to 3 per cent respectively).
