5.1 The increase, over the last 10 years, in the proportion of pupils who choose to stay on at school past the minimum leaving age is reflected in the increase in the participation rates of the 16-18 year old population in school education. This rose from 26 per cent in 1987-88 to around 37 per cent in 1997-98. Some 68 per cent of 16 year olds and 39 per cent of 17 year olds were in school in 1997-98 (compared with 54 per cent and 24 per cent respectively in 1987-88).
