Participation in Education by 16-21 Year Olds in Scotland: 1987-88 to 1997-98

4. Participation by age

4.1 In 1997-98, 50 per cent of 16-21 year olds were participating in some form of full-time education compared with 27 per cent in 1987-88. Participation in full-time education continues to decrease with increasing age: in 1997-98 it was 80 per cent of 16 year olds and 32 per cent of 21 year olds. In 1997-98, participation in part-time education was most popular for 17 and 18 year olds, at 16 per cent for each age groups.
