1.1 This bulletin gives information about the number of 16-21 year olds in Scotland in the academic sessions 1987-88 and 1993-94 to 1997-98 who participated in some form of formal education after reaching the minimum school leaving age. It is the third in a series and updates bulletin Edn/C3/1998/11, pubished in December 1998, which reported statistics up to 1996-97.
1.2 Statistical notes are provided in the Annex.
2.1 In 1997-98, 50 per cent of 16-21 year olds were participating in some form of full-time education compared with 27 per cent in 1987-88.
2.2 The proportion of 16-18 year olds (table 8) at school increased from 26 per cent in 1987-88 to 37 per cent in 1997-98. The percentage in full-time further education (table 9) increased from 5 per cent to 10 per cent, over the same period.
2.3 The proportion of 18-21 year olds in full-time higher education (table 10) increased from 15 per cent in 1987-88 to 36 per cent in 1997-98.
