The Education Committee that will consider the Bill has a wide discretion to call for evidence on matters relating to the Bill and may decide to initiate inquiries of its own. As such, the timings are intended as illustrative.

The Scottish Executive Education Department consults on the draft Bill. |

Parliamentary Stages |

A revised Bill together with accompanying papers is provided to the Parliament. |

The Bill is passed to the Education Committee for consideration of the general principle of the Bill and the consultation exercise. The Committee prepares a report for the Parliament. |

Parliament debates the general principle of the Bill in plenary. The Parliament can approve or reject the Bill at this stage. |

December |
If the Bill is approved it is referred back to the Education Committee for detailed examination and for the consideration of amendments. |

April 2000 |
The Bill as amended is considered in plenary by the Parliament. It may be further amended at this time. The Parliament may approve or reject the Bill. |
|
May 2000 |
If the Bill is approved it goes to receive Royal Assent and becomes law. |
