Building Regulations: Technical Standards

References to published standards

1. Any reference in the Technical Standards to a British Standard (BS) or a British Standard Code of Practice (CP) is to a BS or CP published by the British Standards Institution. Any reference in the Technical Standards to a particular requirement or recommendation of a BS or CP shall be taken, unless the context otherwise requires, as including reference to any relevant commentary and defined terminology contained in that BS or CP.

2. Any reference in the Technical Standards to a British Board of Agrément (BBA) Certificate shall be con-strued as a reference to a BBA Certificate current as at 30 June 1999.

3. Any reference in the Technical Standards to a publication shall be construed as a reference to that publica-tion as detailed in column 1 of the list of publications given in the Appendix, subject to such amendments, supplements, or addenda as are detailed in column 3 of the Appendix.

4. Where a publication referred to in the Technical Standards itself refers to another publication, the reference to such other publication shall be taken to be a reference to the latest edition thereof as at 30 June 1999 including any amendments, supplements or addenda thereto current at that date.

5. In addition, attention is particularly drawn to the status accorded to a wide range of standards and specifica-tions recognised elsewhere in the European Economic Area (see Note below) which provide an equivalent standard of safety, suitability and fitness to that provided in the standards identified in the Technical Standards: see "Provisions deemed to satisfy the standards" for Part B: Fitness of Materials, of the Technical Standards. These important provisions are included to avoid unnecessary restrictions to trade within the European Eco-nomic Area and to ensure compliance with the Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC) as amended. Compliance with the standards contained in publications in these categories represents compliance with the appropriate standards referred to elsewhere in the Technical Standards.

Note:
The European Economic Area Agreement is given in affect in this country by the European Economic Area Act 1993 and entered into force on 1 January 1994.
