Information on Looked After Children
at 31st March 1997 and 1998

4. ACCOMMODATION OF CHILDREN IN CARE /LOOKED AFTER

Around half of the children who are looked after are living at home. In 1998, around 51% of the children looked after are at home; 25% are with foster carers and 17% are in residential care. The remaining 7% are living with friends/ relatives or in other community settings.

In comparison to ten years ago the greatest change has been in the percentage of young people who are looked after and who are living in residential accommodation. In 1988 the percentage in residential care was 22% and in 1998 it had fallen in 17%. This is a reflection of the changing patterns in the use of residential care. Further information is available in an earlier Information Note IN CC1: Information on children in residential accommodation at 31st March 1997. This publication is available on The Scottish Office web site.
