10. Reuse of vacant and derelict land

10.1 The following results on reuse of vacant and derelict land should be treated with caution. This part of the 1997 survey recorded sites being reclaimed or brought back into use, and also provided for the deletion of site records owing to definitional change. One hundred and forty five sites (177 hectares) were removed from the survey for definitional reasons, these have been omitted from the following tables, but can be found in the Annex at table B.

Table 17: Derelict land reclaimed and vacant land brought back into use since 1996 survey by council

10.2 Between 1996 and 1997, the total area of land reclaimed or brought back into use, excluding sites removed for definitional reasons, was 990 hectares comprising 574 sites. Sixty two per cent of this area was derelict land that was reclaimed, of which fifty eight percent was in North Lanarkshire, and 12 per cent was in South Lanarkshire. Of the vacant land that was brought back into use (84 hectares), 22 per cent was in Glasgow and 13 per cent in North Lanarkshire.

10.3 The new uses of sites, or parts of sites, reclaimed or brought back into use was also recorded in the 1997 survey and can be seen in Table 18 (excluding sites removed for definitional reasons).

Table 18: New Uses - Vacant land brought back into use and derelict land reclaimed since 1996 survey

10.4 Almost a quarter of the derelict land reclaimed, where known, was used for mineral activity (24 per cent) and 16 per cent was to be used for forestry or woodland.

10.5 The average size of reclaimed derelict sites was 2.6 hectares. Of those restored to the predominant new use, mineral activities, the average size was 13.5 hectares, while new forestry or woodland sites averaged just over 3.0 hectares.

10.6 Forty three per cent of vacant land brought back into use, where known, was to be used for residential purposes, with 17 per cent to be used for other general industry.

10.7 Vacant sites brought back into use for residential purposes were on average 1.1 hectare, for other general industry, they were on average 1.7 hectares.
