7. Preferred or intended uses

7.1 Planning authorities were asked to show up to three preferred or intended uses for sites as defined in local plans. The distribution of first preferences appears in Table 13.

7.2 Thirty percent of vacant land, where known, had a preferred or intended future use for residential purposes, followed by manufacturing (19 per cent), other general industries (12 per cent) and passive open space (10 per cent). The most common preferred or intended future use, where known, for derelict land was agriculture (26 per cent) followed by other general industries (15 per cent) and residential purposes (13 per cent).
