The Scottish Arts Council
15.1 The Scottish Arts Council (SAC) is the principal channel for Government funding for the arts in Scotland. Figures for attendances at performing and visual arts are compiled annually from information collected from arts organisations which receive revenue funding.
15.2 SAC also distributes funds from the National Lottery to the arts in Scotland and compiles and maintains the relevant statistics.
Football Attendances
15.3 As a result of League reconstruction, the number of clubs playing in each division of the Scottish Football League has altered on several occasions during the past few seasons. This has resulted in the total number of League Championship matches played by each club during the course of the season differing from time to time. The table below shows how this has affected the number of games played:

15.4 Following the implementation of the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster, several clubs operated with greatly reduced capacities as a result of refurbishment work which was undertaken at many grounds throughout Scotland. Celtic F.C. used Hampden Park as their home during the 1994/95 season in order to enable them to rebuild Celtic Park. Indeed, many other clubs have had old stands and terracing areas demolished to be replaced with comfortable new covered stands with numerous facilities for not only fans, but also the corporate business sector and local communities. Some of the clubs that have moved to new custom built stadia include Airdrieonians, Clyde, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Livingston and Stirling Albion whilst other clubs such as Dundee United, Heart of Midlothian, Kilmarnock and Motherwell have all rebuilt their existing grounds.
Swimming Records
15.5 Table 15A7 shows swimming records for both long and short courses. Short course records are those achieved in 25 metre swimming pools and similarly long course records are set in 50 metre pools. The frequency with which records are being broken is increasing. Scotland has successfully hosted several major national and international swimming events in recent years.
Tourism and Visitor Attractions
15.6 The International Passenger Survey, an annual Office for National Statistics (formerly OPCS) survey, is used in completing table 15BI, with regional analysis being commissioned by the British Tourist Authority and the other National Tourist Boards.
15.7 Table 15B2 and 15B11 are based on an 80,000 person interview survey commissioned by the 4 UK countries.
15.8 Tables 15B3, 15B4, 15B5 and 15B6 are completed using figures from the 1997 Visitor Attractions Survey, an annual postal survey conducted to determine trends in the tourism market. Table 15B7 and table 15B8 are compiled from a sample of self-completion postal return questionnaires which are collated monthly.
Scottish Youth Hostel Association
15.9 The Scottish Youth Hostel Association figures are compiled annually from the financial returns of their Hostels throughout Scotland.
