  • To date, the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Department has distributed 656 grants worth over £100 million to arts organisations in Scotland. (Table 15A3)
  • The Scottish Football League championship attendance figures totalled over 3.95 million in the 1997/98 season, a rise of over 397,000 during the past two seasons. (Table 15A4)
  • 888,422 spectators went through the turnstiles at Ibrox in the 1997/98 season to watch Rangers. (Table 15A5)
  • Celtic attracted 873,582 fans to Celtic Park during season 1997/98 as the club won its first Premier Division Championship for 10 seasons. (Table 15A5)
  • Three times Olympian Alison Sheppard continued to perform at the highest level, breaking two Scottish records at the Scottish National Open Championships in June 1998. (Table 15A7)
  • Overseas visitors to Scotland increased by 3% from 1995 to 2,020 thousand in 1996. Visitors were mainly from the USA, Germany and France. (Table 15B1)
  • Edinburgh Castle is still the most popular paid admission visitor attraction with over one million visitors in 1997. (Table 15B5)
  • Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery is the most popular free admission attraction with one million visitors in 1997. (Table 15B6)
  • Spain remains the top holiday destination for Scottish residents. Of 1,410,000 holiday trips taken, 500,000 of them were to Spain. (Table 15B11)
