Chapter 14 finance
  • 56% of local government revenue income for 1995-96 was met by government grants, while 14% came from non domestic rates and 10% from the council tax. The majority of the remaining 20% came from housing rents. (Table 14A1)
  • In 1995-96, 27% of the £9,729 million of local authority total revenue expenditure was on education, 20% was on housing and 13% was on social work. Shadow Council expenditure accounted for less than 1%. (Table 14A3)
  • In 1997-98, Shetland set the lowest level of council tax per band D property - at £486. Glasgow City set the highest level, at £982 per band D property. (Table 14A4)
  • Identifiable general government expenditure in Scotland in 1996-97 was £24,748 million. (Table 14B1)
