Chapter 12 crime and justice
  • In 1997 there were 821 crimes per 10,000 population recorded by the police in Scotland. (Table 12A2)
  • Scottish police recorded 137 victims of homicide in 1996, an increase of 2% compared with 1995. The 1996 figure includes the 17 victims of the Dunblane tragedy. (Table 12A6)
  • In 1997, the Scottish police recorded 1,185 offences in which a firearm was alleged to have been used, 464 fewer offences than in 1996.(Table 12A7)
  • Airweapons accounted for 66% of all offences involving a firearm in 1997. (Table 12A7)
  • In 1996 the number of persons proceeded against in court was 175,457, a decrease of 1 per cent over the 1995 figure. (Table 12A10)
  • The number of persons receiving a custodial sentence in 1996 was 16,923, 4 per cent higher than the figure for 1995 and the highest level recorded. (Table 12B3)
  • The number of adult direct sentenced receptions to penal establishments totalled 10,039 in 1996; an increase of 15% from 1995. The number of young offender direct sentenced receptions rose by 12% in 1996 to 3,112. (Table 12B5)
  • Comparing 1995 and 1996 the average number of adult prisoners serving sentences of less than 2 years increased by 7 per cent. (Table 12B7)
  • At the end of 1997 there were 31,094 firearm certificates on issue. (Table 12D1)
  • Scottish fire brigades attended a total of 108,417 emergency calls in 1997. A decrease of 5 per cent compared to the previous year. (Table 12E2)
  • Malicious false alarm calls dropped to 8,059 in 1997, the lowest ever recorded figure for such calls in Scotland. (Table 12E2)
