Chapter 8 industry
  • Scottish consumers accounted for approximately one-third of the final demand for Scottish domestic output. (Table 8A1)
  • Scotland’s Gross Domestic Product stood at £54 billion in 1996, and represented 8.6 percent of total UK GDP (excluding continental shelf). (Table 8A2)
  • Growth, as measured by the output based GDP index was 2.1 per cent between 1995 and 1996. (Table 8A3)
  • Personal disposable income per head was at 99.5 per cent of the UK per head figure in 1996. (Table 8A4)
  • In 1996, the provisional figure for food, drink and tobacco represented 22 per cent of total consumers’ expenditure. (Table 8A6)
  • Scottish Production Industries experienced a real growth of 7.5 percent between 1996 and 1997. (Table 8B1)
  • The electrical and optical engineering sector has displayed the highest growth within the manufacturing sector by almost tripling its contribution to GDP between 1990 and 1997. (Table 8B1)
  • The Gross Value Added by Scottish manufacturing industries was £11 billion in 1995. (Table 8B3)
