  • In 1997, 62% of persons aged 16 and over were economically active. (Table 6A1)
  • In Spring 1997, the number of female employees in employment accounted for 46% of total employees. (Table 6B1)
  • Employment in the services sector has increased since 1985 whilst employment in the production and construction sectors has fallen. (Table 6B3)
  • Approximately 29% of total employee jobs are part-time; just under half of female employee jobs are part-time. (Table 6B4)
  • Days lost due to industrial stoppages (per 1,000 employees) fell from 60 to 26 between 1996 and 1997. (Table 6B7)
  • The annual average number of unfilled vacancies by occupation increased by over 6,000 between 1996 and 1997. (Table 6C3)
