Revised. [SCIEH constantly reviews and revises the Scottish AIDS/HIV register. New information on HIV cases may also be obtained from their subsequent AIDS registration. These changes mean that the data presented in this edition may differ from that published in previous editions.
Registration of a case of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) depends on the criteria for case definition which are stipulated by the World Health Organisation and the Centers for Disease Control, US Public Health Service - as current at the time each case is reported (the most recent revision dates from 1 July 1993)
A case first registered in a country outside the UK is re-registered in the UK when first seen for treatment in a UK hospital. A case first registered within the UK but outside Scotland is not re-registered when treatment in a National Health Service in Scotland facility is sought.
Deaths recorded in this table relate only to AIDS cases registered in Scotland - the numbers shown may not equate with those relating to death certificates. The numbers refer to the year of death.
Persons volunteer for HIV-antibody testing. Thus, in the absence of any community-wide asssessment of the HIV-antibody status of the Scottish population, inferences about spread of infection are difficult to draw.
HIV refers to Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Type 1.
Each case is registered according to its most likely transmission category, based on information available at the time of registration. Some cases have arisen from transmission which occurred outwith the UK.
Cumulative totals to 30 September 1997.
Figures include several males who are also injecting drug users.
