Excludes diagnoses of non-STI conditions, and of HIV and AIDS. Cases of STI diagnosed in settings other than GUM clinics (eg in GP practices) are also excluded.
A revised classification system for diagnoses was introduced on 1 April 1995. Comparison of trends for certain diagnostic groups, before and after this revision, should be made with caution. In particular: re-registered cases of genital warts were not recorded prior to 1995/96; bacterial vaginosis was previously regarded as a ‘non-STI’and was not separately recorded; and the classification of NSGI, other genital tract infections and other STIs was revised. Also, the ‘All STIs’ figures for later years will not be fully comparable with those for earlier years.
Prior to 1990 chlamydia was recorded under non-specific genital infections.
Prior to 1990 genital herpes were not split into first and subsequent presentation.
Prior to 1990 genital warts were not split into first occurrence and recurrence.
