Excludes NHS activity in joint-user and contractual hospitals.
Year ending 31 March (except for bed complement and inpatient true waiting list which are as at 31 March).
Provisional.
Comprises discharges, deaths, transfers out of hospitals and transfers between specialties within same hospital.
Excludes transfers for medical reasons between consultants within the same specialty.
Inpatient true waiting list - excludes day case waiting lists, and repeat and deferred waiting lists.
At consultant clinics. Includes accident & emergency and genito - urinary medicine.
Prior to 1996/97, certain hospitals recorded ward attenders as return outpatient attendances. The number of ward attenders previously reported as outpatient attendances is estimated at around 80 000. This change in recording means that comparison of total outpatient attendances for 1996/97 with those for earlier years should be made with caution.
