3. Population Statistics

Population

3.1 The throughput of prisoners in 1997-98 was as shown below (figures for last year in brackets):

Sentenced Receptions 21,352 (23,986)

Remand Receptions 14,723 (15,609)

3.2 The average daily population was 6,059 (5,991) which included 927 (1,020) unconvicted or remand prisoners, who account for approximately 15.3% of those held in custody in Scotland. Further details at the end of March 1998 were as shown below:

  • Life sentences 563 (543)
  • Less than 2 years 1098 (1,091)
  • Less than 6 months 987 (982)
  • Young offenders 724 (749)
  • Female offenders 137 (121)

3.3 Security categories were as follows:

  • ‘A’ (maximum security) 9 (14)
  • ‘B’ (secure conditions) 3650 (including 669 Remands) (3,610)
  • ‘C’ (minimum of restrictions) 2076 (1,899)
  • ‘D’ (open conditions) 556 (including limited ‘D’) (652)

3.4 Persons Awaiting Deportation 13 (mainly held at HMP Greenock) (24)

Statistics

3.5 During 1997-98 there were 19 deaths in prison (26) which included 13 suicides (17). There were 108 serious assaults by prisoners on other prisoners, (127) whilst staff suffered a total of 18 serious assaults. (14).
