SPS Establishments and Capacity

North and East

1. HMP Aberdeen 36.5% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, southern side of Aberdeen. 130 cells plus 8 TFF places. 10 female cells also available. (20 places temporarily out of use.)

2. HMP Castle Huntly Open prison near Dundee for Category ‘D’ short-term convicted adult males. 150 places.

3. HMP Edinburgh 42.5% overcrowded. Local short-term/remand and national long term prison, western outskirts of Edinburgh. 558 cells including 21 TFF places (40 cells temporarily out of use).

4. HMP Friarton Closed prison on southern outskirts of Perth for short-term convicted Category ‘C’ adult males, with less than 12 months left to serve. 90 places.

5. HMP and HMYOI Closed establishment for adult males serving sentences of over 4 years and for YOs with sentences up to

Glenochil 18 months. 496 adult and 174 YO cells. (1 place out of use in prison and 2 in YOI.)

6. HMP Inverness 23% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, close to City Centre. 101 male and 6 female cells.

7. HMP Noranside Open prison west of Forfar, for Category ‘D’ adult males. 135 cells.

8. HMP Perth 31% overcrowded. Local short-term convicted/remand and national long-term prison, south of town centre. 444 cells.

9. HMP Peterhead Closed establishment south of Peterhead with 291 cells for male adult long term sex offenders.

10. HM Unit Peterhead 10 cells for adult males unable to cope with mainstream prison life.

11. HMYOI Polmont 13.3% overcrowded. Closed Institution south of Falkirk for male Young Offenders. 474 cells plus 16 TFF places. (Temporary accommodation block with 32 cells currently not in use.)

South and West

12. HMP Barlinnie 40.7% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, Riddrie, Glasgow. 998 cells (50 temporarily out of use).

13. HM Institution Adult and YO female prisoners and remands, Bridge of Allan. 217 cells including 7 TFF places.

Cornton Vale

14. HMP and HMYOI Closed Institution on western outskirts of Dumfries, mainly for long term YOs and local remand Dumfries prisoners. 150 cells, including 8 female cells for females.

15. HMP Dungavel Closed prison south of Strathaven for long-term Category ‘C’ adult males, serving sentences of between 4 and (but not including ) 10 years. 135 places (13 places temporarily out of use).

16. HMP Greenock Local/remand and long-term prison for males, southern outskirts of Greenock. 233 cells available.

17. HM Remand Remand unit, north of Airdrie, for males under 21 years of age. 176 places (19 places temporarily out of

Institution Longriggend use).

18. HMP Low Moss Closed prison near Kirkintilloch for Category ‘C’ or ‘D’ adult males serving short sentences. 396 places.

19. HMP Penninghame Open prison north of Newton Stewart for long term category ‘D’ adult males. 98 places available.

20. HMP Shotts Adult male prison near village of Shotts for those with sentences over 4 years, including long-term vunerable prisoners. 462 cells.

21. HM Unit Shotts 12 cells for adult males unable to cope with mainstream prison life. (2 places out of use for policy reasons.)

22. HM National 54 cells for the first 6-12 months of sentence for adult males sentenced to 10 years or more.

Induction Centre, Shotts

TOTAL 6,024 cells/places (including 128 temporarily out of use for refurbishment and 51 out of use for policy reasons).

23. HMP Kilmarnock Due to be opened in Spring 1999 with 500 cells for Category ‘B’ prisoners. (Prisoner population profile yet to be finally determined.)
