Chapter 10 - General Conditions
The General conditions set out in this section apply to all applications for tourist signing.

10.1 The size of tourist signs, including the x height of the lettering of the tourist attraction/facility/accommodation or eating establishment will be related to the estimated speed of traffic using the road where the sign is to be located and subject to approval by the Secretary of State. All signs must comply with the provisions of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994 as revised or amended from time to time.

10.2 The commercial name of the tourist attraction/facility/ accommodation or eating establishment may be included on tourist signs however the wording may have to be abbreviated at the discretion of the Secretary of State depending on the size and location of the sign. 10.3 The maximum number of tourist attractions/facilities/ accommodation or eating establishments contained on a composite, or stack sign shall normally be limited to 4 plus local destinations. However, providing the number of lines of text describing the tourist attractions/facilities/ accommodation or eating establishments on a composite sign does not exceed 8 in total, consideration may be given by the Secretary of State to signing one additional tourist attraction/facility/ accommodation or eating establishment. Where there are more tourist attractions/facilities/accommodation or eating establishments than can be accommodated on the sign, the Secretary of State will make the final decision following consultation with STB and/or Area Tourist Boards as to which tourist attractions/facilities/accommodation or eating establishments will be signed from the trunk road. The Secretary of State may only approve generic type signing eg "Hotels and B & B" in such circumstances.

10.4 Not more than one tourist attraction/facility/ accommodation or eating establishment sign as described in 10.3 shall be permitted in advance of a junction.

10.5 When applying to the Secretary of State for tourist signposting
a tourist operator must submit with the application documentary evidence from STB that the tourist attraction/facility/ accommodation or eating establishment complies with the appropriate STB Quality Assurance Scheme. Compliance with the appropriate Quality Assurance Scheme will not automatically result in signing being approved on the trunk road.

10.6 If a tourist attraction/facility/accommodation or eating establishment as defined in Annexes B(1) and B(2) is eligible for signing from the trunk road, signing shall normally commence from the nearest trunk road. In determining the location of tourist signing on trunk roads the hierarchy of the local road network will be considered to ensure the most suitable route to the tourist attraction/facility/accommodation or eating establishment is utilised. The relevant local authority's tourist signposting policy will also be considered in arriving at the most appropriate location of the sign.

In addition at junctions where there are only one or 2 tourist attractions/facilities/accommodation and eating establishments, and the space available at the junction allows, a sign similar to the advance direction sign containing the commercial name will be permitted. Consideration will only be given to increasing the number of tourist attractions/facilities/accommodation or eating establishments on this sign where the total number of lines of text on the sign does not exceed 4. Where the number of lines of text on a sign at a junction exceeds 4, generic signs indicating for example, "Visitor Attractions" together with the "Thistle" symbol and, if appropriate, the symbol(s) for HS, NTS, Castle or House of historic or architectural interest as described in para 3.6, will be used.

The cost of carrying out this work shall be met by the tourist operator. As an alternative, consideration will be given to including on the sign supplementary information about opening periods, e.g "Open Apr to Sept" but only where this additional information can be accommodated on the sign, in accordance with section 10.2.

10.10 Approval of tourist signs by the Secretary of State will be conditional on the removal of the tourist operators existing advertising signs where these are considered to be a distraction to the trunk road user.

All old style signs which are superseded by new tourist signs shall be removed at the expense of the tourist operator prior to the erection of new signs.

10.11 If a new tourist attraction/facility/accommodation or eating establishment is to be signed at a location where existing tourist signing is in place, the operator of the new tourist attraction/facility/ accommodation or eating establishment will require to meet the full cost of altering the existing signs to that which will be acceptable to the Secretary of State including, if deemed necessary, replacing the entire sign. 10.14 Where the Secretary of State considers a proposed sign is likely to be visually or environmentally intrusive, he reserves the right to refuse the application or require the operator to amend the layout and wording of the sign, in order to reduce its visual and environmental impact.
