Tourist Attractions and Facilities |
| 3.1A
tourist attraction/facility is now more broadly defined for signing purposes as being a
permanently established destination or facility that attracts or is used by visitors, to
an area, and which is open to the public without prior booking during its normal opening
hours and which is recognised by STB as a tourist attraction/facility. Examples of the
types of tourist attractions/ facilities eligible for signing under this section are
attached at Annex B(1).
3.2 STB will use their Quality Assurance Schemes to ensure that the tourist attractions/facilities to be signed are of an acceptable standard. Retail establishments require to participate in STB's Quality Assurance Scheme for Visitor Attractions to qualify for tourist signs. 3.3 Signs will only be permitted to tourist attractions/facilities within 20 kms (12 miles) of the trunk road. In exceptional circumstances signing may be permitted to tourist attractions/facilities in rural areas at a greater distance. In such cases approval will only be granted at the discretion of the Secretary of State having regard to the particular circumstances of the case. 3.4 The signing of tourist attractions/facilities in Towns/Important Settlements as defined by the relevant local authority's tourist signposting policy is subject to special consideration. See Section 6. 3.5 Signing to areas of specific geographic interest will be considered for tourist signing but only where the area to be signed is recognised as a tourist area and is promoted as such. Well defined tourist areas include the Trossachs, Glencoe and Loch Lomond. Applications for such signing must be supported by the local authority and the STB or Area Tourist Board. Signing to administrative areas are not regarded as tourist signs and will not be signed with brown and white signs. 3.6 All tourist attractions/facilities meeting STB requirements will be signed with the "Thistle" symbol referred to in paragraph 2 of SODD Circular 27/1995, as defined in drawing number W(S) 157. However on single attraction signs for properties under the care of Historic Scotland (HS) or National Trust for Scotland (NTS) the "Thistle" symbol may be supplemented with the appropriate symbol for HS or NTS as defined in diagrams T302 and T303 of Schedule 14, Part IV of The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994 as amended or revised from time to time. On composite signs containing 2 or more tourist attractions/facilities which include HS or NTS properties the "Thistle" symbol may be replaced by the appropriate symbol for HS or NTS. On single attraction signs for a Castle or House of historic or architectural interest, it is proposed that the "Thistle" symbol be supplemented or replaced with the appropriate symbol for such properties as defined in diagrams T2 and T3 of Schedule 14, Part 1 of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994 as amended or revised from time to time. On composite signs containing 2 or more tourist attractions/facilities, one or more of which include a Castle or House of historic or architectural interest, the "Thistle" symbol may be replaced by the appropriate symbol for such properties. 3.7 In certain circumstances tourist signs may be permitted on trunk roads in the form of "For (Tourist Attraction/Facility(s) name) follow .........". |
