| 3.1 The throughput of prisoners in 1996-97 was as assessed

| 3.5 During 1996-97 there were 26 deaths in prison (15)
which included 17 suicides (8). There were 127 serious assaults by prisoners on other
prisoners (108) with staff suffering a total of 14 serious assaults on them (14). |
