3 POPULATION
Population
3.1 The throughput of prisoners in 1996-97 was as assessed below, with figures for the previous year being shown in brackets:
Sentenced Receptions 24,835 (18,190)
Remand Receptions 15,592 (13,886)
3.2 The average daily population was 5,991 (5,632) which included 1,020 (988) unconvicted or remand prisoners who account for approximately 20% of those held in custody in Scotland. Further details at the end of March 1997 were as shown below:

3.4 Persons Awaiting Deportation 24 (mainly held at HMPGreenock) (20)
Other Statistics
3.5 During 1996-97 there were 26 deaths in prison (15) which included 17 suicides (8). There were 127 serious assaults by prisoners on other prisoners (108) with staff suffering a total of 14 serious assaults on them (14).
