SPS ESTABLISHMENTS AND DESIGN CAPACITY
North and East
HMP Aberdeen 30% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, southern outskirts of Aberdeen. 130 cells plus 8 TFF places. 10 female cells also available.
HMP Castle Huntly Open prison near Dundee for Category ‘D’ adult males. 144 places.
HMP Edinburgh 50% overcrowded. Local short-term/remand and national long term prison, western outskirts of Edinburgh. 550 cells including 21 TFF places (41 cells temporarily out of use).
HMP Friarton Closed prison on southern outskirts of Perth for convicted Category ‘C’ and ‘D’ adult males; 56 cells.
HMP and HMYOI Glenochil Closed establishment for adult males serving sentences of over 4 years and for YOs with sentences up to 12 months. 496 adult and 174 YO cells (87 cells temporarily out of use).
HMP Inverness 23% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, close to City Centre. 101 male and 6 female cells (3 male cells temporarily out of use).
HMP Noranside Open prison west of Forfar, for Category ‘D’ adult males. 135 cells (12 temporarily out of use).
HMP Perth 49% overcrowded. Local short-term/remand and national long-term prison, south of town centre. 435 cells (125 temporarily out of use).
HMP Peterhead Closed establishment south of Peterhead with 199 cells for male adult long term vulnerable prisoners/sex offenders. (62 cells mothballed for national contingency purposes.)
HM Unit Peterhead 10 cells for adult males unable to cope with mainstream prison life.
HMYOI Polmont 15% overcrowded. Closed Institution south of Falkirk for male Young Offenders. 406 cells plus 16 TFF places. (Temporary accommodation block with 30 cells currently not in use.)
South and West
HMP Barlinnie 51% overcrowded. Local/remand prison, Riddrie, Glasgow. 1011 cells (186 temporarily out of use).
HM Institution Cornton Vale Adult and YO female prisoners and remands, Bridge of Allan. 219 cells plus 7 TFF places (41 cells temporarily out of use).
HMP and HMYOI Dumfries Closed Institution on western outskirts of Dumfries, mainly for long term YOs and local remand prisoners. 149 cells, 8 female cells also available (3 cells temporarily out of use).
HMP Dungavel Closed prison south of Strathaven for Category ‘C’ adult males. 135 places (of which 30 temporarily out of use).
HMP Greenock Local/remand and long-term prison for males, southern outskirts of Greenock. 232 cells available.
HM Remand Institution Longriggend Remand unit, north of Airdrie, for males under 21 years of age. 177 cells.
HMP Low Moss Closed prison near Kirkintilloch for Category ‘C’ or ‘D’ adult males with short sentences. 396 places.
HMP Penninghame Open prison north of Newton Stewart for long term category ‘D’ adult males. 95 places available.
HMP Shotts Adult male prison near village of Shotts for those with sentences over 4 years. 462 cells.
HM Unit Shotts 12 cells for adult males unable to cope with mainstream prison life.
HM National Induction Centre, Shotts 55 cells for the first 6-12 months of sentence for adult males sentenced to 10 years or more.
TOTAL 5,911 cells/places (including 558 temporarily out of use for refurbishment and 62 out of use for policy reasons).
