| 1. INTRODUCTION On 9, 20, 21 and 23 April 1998 an intermediate inspection was carried out by

| This was the first such inspection of HMP Barlinnie since
publication of the Report of the last formal inspection which took place between 11-21 May
1997. This report consists of an updated general
assessment of the Prison together with an assessment of the current situation in
relation to the main areas of concern which were highlighted in the formal inspection
report. Also included is a record of the comments made by staff and prisoner groups,
together with an assessment of progress made on the Recommendations and Points of Note
contained in the 1997 report.
