DRUGS IN SCOTLAND: MEETING THE CHALLENGE |
PRISONS
59. The Scottish Prison Service should further develop reduction to abstinence and education programmes for long-term prisoners appropriate to the needs of the individuals (para 8.29).
60. The Medical Adviser to the Scottish Prison Service should make arrangements for all prison medical staff to have regular training sessions on drug misuse issues, either in-house or by attendance at external courses (para 8.31).
61. The Social Work Services Group of The Scottish Office and the Scottish Prison Service should consider the feasibility of a throughcare pilot scheme to determine what combination of support and advice for prisoners with drug problems (and their families), during imprisonment and following return to the community, might help the prisoner to remain drug free on release and assist the development of good practice (para 8.34).
62. Drug Action Teams should encourage arrangements to develop liaison between prisons in their area and community-based drug services on the lines developed in Tayside. It may be necessary to coordinate and support these local initiatives. SWSG and the Scottish Prison Service should consider how best this can be taken forward (para 8.35).
