SUMMARY OF PRACTICES COMMENDED TO ESTABLISHMENTS

HMYOI Dumfries May 1994 (1) A training programme was prepared every quarter and contained the names of staff targetted for training.
(2) YOs were being consulted to find out which activities they would wish to see included in the PE programme.
(3) In the local Communications Plan, a section had been included on first impressions, emphasising the importance of courtesy at work.
HMP Inverness August 1994 (4) Piped music had been provided in the suicide observation cells.
(5) Monthly meetings were held between representatives of staff and prisoners.
HMYOI Polmont November 1994 (6) A Communications Therapist was employed to assist those YOs who had speech or language difficulties.
(7) A sensor system of lighting had been installed in the main corridor which meant that lights came on only when required.
HMP Friarton January 1995 (8) Prisoners had been made aware of the Scottish Complaints Commission by including a copy of the latter’s leaflet in the information pack which was given to every prisoner on admission.
HMP Dungavel March 1995 (9) Meals for visitors could be ordered by prisoners at week-ends, and taken together in the dining room.
HMP Peterhead March 1995 (10) Each prisoner had been issued with a security cabinet in which to keep his valuables. (These had been purchased from prison funds. ‘Emergency’ keys were held in HQ.)
