6. Gross Value Added per employee
6.1 In 1996, overall gross value added (GVA) per employee, at current prices, in the electronics industry fell by 4 per cent from its 1995 level, compared with a 2 per cent rise in manufacturing as a whole. GVA per employee in the data processing equipment sector increased from £48,600 per head in 1995 to £68,700 per head in 1996, a rise of 41 per cent. But this was offset by a fall in the electronic components sector, which fell by 38 per cent, from £62,600 per head in 1995 to £39,000 per head in 1996. Other electronics also showed a decrease in the same period of 10 per cent (see Table 6 and Fig 2).
6.2 Figures for GVA per employee at current prices for the individual sectors within electronics are subject to quite a large degree of volatility, and must be treated with some caution. This is because at this level of disaggregation, figures for GVA in particular can be heavily influenced by the figures from a relatively small number of companies.

Notes 1. Figures calculated using Total Employment and Gross Value Added at Factor Cost. This is consistent with 1992-95 figures. 2. Figures calculated using Total Employment adjusted for Part Time Workers and Gross Value Added at Basic Prices. 3. For definitions of sectors see Annex, "Statistical notes and definitions".
6.3 In the 4 years since 1992, total electronics GVA per employee, at current prices, rose by 77 per cent. This compared favourably with total manufacturing GVA per employee, which rose by 36 per cent over the same period.

6.4 Overall, between 1992 and 1996, GVA per employee in the electronics industry increased by an average of 15 per cent per annum. For comparison, the increase in non-electronics manufacturing in the same period was 6 per cent per annum.
6.5 Prior to 1996, figures for GVA from the SPD are given at factor cost. From 1996, following changes to ONS inquiries as a consequence of the European System of Accounts 1995 (ESA95), GVA is now usually quoted at basic prices (see Annex for definitions). Table 6 gives figures for 1996 under both definitions for comparison.
