5. Ownership

5.1 The percentage of the electronics industry’s workforce employed in UK-owned plants fell from its 1995 level of 48 per cent to 42 per cent in 1996. For the first time since 1993, USA-owned plants accounted for the largest share of employment within the electronics sector in Scotland in 1996, at 46 per cent. Employment attributable to Japanese-owned plants increased from 9 per cent in 1995 to 10 per cent in 1996, its highest level over the period (see Table 4).

3. Countries included in EU banding are those which are currently members.

5.2 UK-owned plants were the largest employers in Scotland in the electronic instrument engineering sector, with a share of total employment in 1996 of just over 95 per cent. All sectors showed a decline in UK ownership between 1995 and 1996. The largest fall was in the data processing equipment sector which decreased from 47 per cent in 1995 to 32 per cent in 1996. Other electronics showed the next greatest fall from 32 per cent in 1995 to 28 per cent in 1996. (Using the figures for total employment adjusted for part time workers, for 1996, shows similar trends).
