Chapter 5: Developing a Resource Directory
 
Organisations need to have a resource directory containing up-to-date information, readily accessible to staff, with multiple copies available in large organisations. It should be part of a member of staff's job description to review it regularly and keep it up to date. Directories should include:
  • Copies of relevant legislation such as the Race Relations Act 1976.
  • Copies of agency policies on equal opportunities, race equality strategies/action plans, and complaints procedures. Consider having bilingual or multilingual copies, particularly of complaints procedures.
  • A directory of local organisations with agreed criteria for referrals and contact names, including information on interpreting and translation services.   • A list of local places of worship, together with contacts and calendars of religious festivals.
  • The name and address of the nearest multicultural library which will have, for instance, a list of black and minority ethnic newspapers where job advertisements can be placed.
  • A list of suppliers of multicultural play materials eg:

  • For older children a list of popular magazines and catalogues of tapes and CD's featuring black and minority ethnic music.
  • A list of organisations issuing publications which concern black and minority ethnic children, including:

      Provide a range of publications for and about children. Their black issues staff can also advise on resources.

  • A list of sources for training materials, including:

  • For day care, residential services and foster carers a list of:
    • Local or nearest hairdressers with expertise in cutting and styling African hair.
    • Suppliers of toiletries which suit the hair and skin of minority ethnic people.
    • Where to buy specific foods for different ethnic, cultural and religious groups, for example Halal meat or African vegetables and fruits.
    • Where to buy Asian textiles and outfits.
  • A list of national organisations with a brief description and telephone number. Suggestions include:

Centre for Education for Racial Equality in Scotland

CERES aims to promote education for racial equality within educational services. They provide a lending library along with consultancy, advice and support.

Commission For Racial Equality

The CRE together with local authorities fund a network of local Racial Equality Councils and Community Relations Councils. Work includes the encouragement and offer of advice to employers to promote policy change and equality of opportunity; case work for victims of racial discrimination or harassment, and the promotion of community development.

Communn na Gaidhlig

CNAG's aim is to promote and develop the Gaelic language. They support Comhairle nan Sgoiltean Ariach (CNSA) the Gaelic pre-school Council.

Heartstone

Heartstone is a national voluntary organisation which aims to reduce prejudice and foster friendship and co-operation between children and young people across nationalities and cultures. It works with children and young people aged 8-18.

Immigration Advisory Service

The IAS is a registered charity with a board of directors. It offers free, independent advice, assistance and representation to persons subject to immigration control. They have a duty officer who can be contacted 24 hrs a day.

Save the Children Fund, Scottish Division Traveller Section

The Scottish Division Traveller Section works directly with traveller families, local authorities, police and central government, health services and voluntary organisation to ensure access to public services and to challenge prejudice and discrimination towards this minority group.

Scottish Anti Racist Federation in Community Development and Social Work

SARF is a network of black and white people coming together in order to promote an anti-racist perspective in practice and training. Objectives include the improvement of community relations through the provision of education, information and training to individuals involved in the fields of social work and community development.

Scottish Black Workers Forum

The Forum offers support, training and networking for black workers in social work and community education in Scotland.

Scottish Ethnic Minorities Research Unit

The primary function of SEMRU is to promote and carry out applied and policy-orientated research on the position of ethnic minority groups and the incidence of racism and racial discrimination in Scotland.

Scottish Refugee Council

The Scottish Refugee Council provide support to refugees and give advice and information on asylum, housing, education, training, employment, welfare, family reunion and counselling. They are also involved in campaigning for better services for refugees and in promoting a better understanding of the situation of refugees in Scotland.
