(1) Figures may differ to those already published in the individual Chief Constable's Annual Report as a result of timing differences in the submission of data to The Scottish Office and the production of the Chief Constable's Reports.
(2) The Definition of serious assault was revised at the beginning of 1990. Under the revised definition there wouldhave been some 1,150 fewer non-sexual crimes of violence and a compensating increase in the number of petty assaults in the miscellaneous category.
(3) Certain motor vehicle offences are not always recorded in cases where police forces are unable to clear-up the offence (eg speeding offences where the driver is untraceable). Clear-up rates for motor vehicle offences in these circumstances are artificial. Thus, clear-up rates for the motor vehicle offence category and clear-up rates for Total Offences (which include motor vehicle offences) are not included.
