(1) Figures may differ to those already published in the individual Chief Constable's Annual Reports as a result of timing differences in the submission of data to The Scottish Office and the production of the Chief Constables' Reports.

(2) The definition of serious assault was revised at the beginning of 1990. Under the revised definition there would have been some 1,150 fewer non- sexual crimes of violence and a compensating increase in the number of petty assaults in the miscellaneous offences category.

(3) These figures exclude "offending while on bail".
