BDA

British Deaf Association

British Sign Language

The sign language used in the UK. It (BSL) has its own grammar and idioms and is different from English.

BSL Interpreters

They are fluent in BSL and spoken English and should be fully qualified and registered with SASLI.

CACDP

Centre for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People

Community Care Plan

A document produced every year by all local agencies which sets out how services for adults will be developed over the next three years.

CQSW

Certificate of Qualification in Social Work

Deaf Community

Deaf people who use BSL, feel that they share a culture with other deaf people and are part of a linguistic minority, are in the Deaf Community.

DipSW

Diploma in Social Work

Hard of Hearing

Someone who has a hearing loss, and prefers to use hearing and lipreading to communicate.

LVA

Low Vision Aid

Lipspeaker

Someone who silently speaks very clearly repeating the hearing speaker thus enabling a hard of hearing person to lip-read what is said. They should hold a qualification.

Makaton

A system of signs from BSL. It is useful for people with learning disabilities. It is not a language.

Moon

An embossed communication system using raised symbols similar to the standard alphabet.

RNIB

Royal National Institute for the Blind

RNID

Rehabilitation Officer

Trained person who helps blind people become more independent.

Text 'Phone

A machine which Deaf people use to communicate on the 'phone. It has a small screen so the message can be read.

Thermoform

A process whereby plastics are heated and stretched over a tactile template using a vacuum to produce raised shapes, e.g. maps or diagrams

Usher Syndrome

A genetic condition linking deafness with the degenerative eye condition retinitis pigmentosa.
