Raising Standards in Literacy and Numeracy

Fife Council
Strategy
Project Name: Stepping Stones
Aims of the Project:
  • To prepare and equip all pupils for life-long learning.
  • To foster strong partnerships with parents/carers.
  • To develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
  • To incorporate approaches to involve the community in development of early intervention approaches.
Although we have concentrated mainly on raising standards in numeracy and literacy we have tried to raise children’s self esteem giving them confidence on their own ability to learn successfully.
The project is co-ordinated by the Adviser (Early Years). Three Area/Co-ordinator/Home-link Teachers have been seconded. Thirteen Support Assistants have been employed to support the P1 Teachers.

Scope
The project is concentrated in 3 areas, of the authority, and involves 22 primary schools and 5 independent nurseries, providing opportunities for some 1800 children.

Achievements and emerging lessons
Opportunities to liaise and work with parents, outside agencies, voluntary groups, community and education workers as well as supporting schools and nurseries. The project is an example of joint working across the Social Strategy Sector.
Commitment and enthusiasm from all staff involved.
Noticeable differences in the classroom where staff are being constantly surprised and delighted by what the children can do.
Opportunities for groups of staff to work together to produce staff development materials.
A ‘Shared Record’ recording children’s progress from Nursery to P1 has been developed further to incorporate Baseline Assessment Procedures.

"The children are all so much happier to put pen to paper - it is just no longer the chore it used to be. I now have a class of writers". Diane Palmer Teacher/Kirkton of Large PS
"Although it is early days for this project, as far as I can see it is proving to be very successful. My daughter comes out of class every day with a smile on her face. To me that smile proves that this method of teaching must be working". Karen Ballentyne - Parent
"There is a new injection of fun and enthusiasm, but most importantly, I have raised my expectations of every child’s ability. I have given them better understanding of numbers all around, but also the opportunity to tell me all about it". Kirsten Awison Teacher/Kelty PS
