Raising Standards in Literacy and Numeracy |
East Dunbartonshire Council
Strategy
East Dunbartonshire Council is undertaking 2 main projects with the additional finance made available.
Project 2 is aimed at raising achievement in reading in the early years.
This project which has a staff development focus will not be fully implemented until August 1998 and will undertake work with the following groups - nursery staff, P1 teachers, Headteachers and parents.
The project is being evaluated by conducting a literacy baseline assessment with the current P1 population in the schools involved acting as a control with further assessments being carried out on an annual basis with subsequent P1 groups.
A highly successful 2 day conference on Early Intervention was organised for all Primary and Nursery Headteachers and Service Managers in March.
Project 1 concerns itself with the development of a pupil profiling system at the P1 stage to identify pupils who may require additional consideration when planning learning and teaching activities.
This profiling system creates a basis for intervention with the development of appropriate strategies by the class teachers in collaboration with Network Support staff.
Ten schools were involved in a pilot of the profiling system from August 1997 with Network Support in those schools being focused in the main around the P1-4 stages.
Scope
Project 2 - 13 schools involved with a total of 824 pupils at P1 or Pre5 stage benefiting.
Project 1- 10 schools involved with 380 pupils at the P1 stage benefiting.
NB: Seven schools in Project 1 are also involved in Project 2.
Achievements and emerging lessons
The success of Project 1 has been such that the pupil profiling system developed will be introduced to all 36 primary schools in East Dunbartonshire from August 1998.
The focusing of support for learning in the early stages ensures that intervention can be facilitated with a support plan being established at an early stage for pupils who require additional consideration.

"I found this to be a most practical method of assessment which had very clear implications for subsequent planning and the learning and teaching taking place in my classroom."(AD an experienced P1 teacher.)
