Cost Effective Landscape: Learning from Nature
3. Illustrated Examples

3.1 The following illustrated examples of the policy are grouped under 5 parts corresponding to the 5 stages of the procedure. The purpose of the examples and illustrations is not to provide definitive solutions to specific problems but rather to demonstrate the process by which a particular conclusion has been reached. Each issue will have innumerable solutions, limited only by the understanding and knowledge of the site and by the skill of the individuals involved.

3.2 Some of the examples are critical of current and past practices. To move forward it must be accepted that there will always be alternative ways of doing things and scope for improvement. This attitude and process of continual self-assessment is an essential element of the policy and should be seen as a strength rather than a weakness.

3.3 Some of the examples may result in small cost savings and relatively minor environmental benefits but it is important to realise that good environmental management systems like good business practice depend on everybody endeavouring to make a contribution, however small.

3.4 The intention is to monitor the case studies and illustrations and learn from the experience. The National Roads Directorate would like others to contribute to this learning process and will consider how best to take this forward in partnership with practitioners.
