LOCAL ENVIRONMENT CHARTER FOR SCOTLAND

5. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE

The Scottish Office Environment Department
This booklet provides you with an insight into environmental services. If you would like to know more about Government action to protect or enhance the environment, or if you have a concern about a particular environmental matter, you should contact The Scottish Office Environment Department at 83 Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2ER (phone: 031-529 8661). Someone there will help you to make contact with the appropriate part of The Scottish Office or other Government Departments.

HM Industrial Pollution Inspectorate (Scotland) (HMIPI)
HMIPI's core responsibility is to control industry's emissions of pollutants to the atmosphere by acting as "environmental police". The Inspectorate's duties are a mixture of inspection, enforcement and giving advice. Their responsibilities include Integrated Pollution Control and environmental monitoring. HMIPI can be contacted at 27 Perth Street, Edinburgh, EH3 5RB (phone: 031-244 3062).

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH)
SNH promotes the conservation and public enjoyment of our natural heritage - the countryside and its wildlife. It designates and cares for areas such as National Nature Reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and National Scenic Areas. It also provides advice and carries out research. SNH can be contacted as 12 Hope Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 2AS (phone: 031-4474784) or at one of the following regional offices:-

Fraser Darling House, 9 Culduthel Road, Inverness, IV2 4 AG (phone: 0463 239431),

Caspian House, Clydebank Business Park, Clydebank, G81 2NR (phone: 041-951 4488),

River Purification Authorities
The addresses and telephone numbers of Scotland's River Purification Authorities - the 7 mainland River Purification Boards (RPBs) and the 3 Island Councils - are set out at the end of this section. All RPBs have arrangements to receive calls out of office hours, which you can call if you suspect a pollution incident.
Each RPB publishes an annual report on its pollution control work and water quality in its area; copies are available at the main office of each Board.
