List of Good Practice

HMIC considers the following to be good practice.

1 The external advertisement of superintendent vacancies (paragraph 3.7).

2 The formation of a Lay Advisory Group to help develop relationships with local minority ethnic communities based on trust, openness and accountability. (paragraph 3.17).

3 The formal introduction of Exit Interviews for all staff leaving the organisation (paragraph 3.30).

4 The external scrutiny and evaluation of work life balance through a successful bid for funding from the DTI (paragraph 3.41).

5 The introduction of mobile CCTV units in tackling crime and the fear of crime (paragraph 4.15).

6 The Partnership initiative with Barnado's. The initiative offers an enhanced level of service, including long term support, to the victims of domestic abuse and their families (paragraph 4.42).

7 The efforts of the Domestic Abuse Officer (DAO) to reach those victims of abuse who are reluctant to contact the police directly, or attend at a police station (paragraph 4.44).

8 The operation of an officer briefing system, known as FOCUS, further enhanced by use of projection through a wall mounted plasma screen within the briefing room (paragraph 5.87).

9 The introduction of a policy on officer supplied DNA samples, addressing the issue of potential cross contamination at crime scenes by facilitating the availability of an elimination database (paragraph 5.96).

10 The use of a 'skills database' held in HQ Road Policing Unit, with input from the staff appraisal personal development plans to assist in ensuring sufficient officers in the unit have the required specialist skills (paragraph 5.124).

11 The forum of the Vehicle Users and Supplies Group, which with wide force representation, operates as a focal point for matters concerning the vehicle fleet, encompassing such matters as the type and location of equipment in vehicles within its remit (paragraph 5.128).
